The world of fashion is often criticized for its environmental impact and wasteful practices. But what if we could transform discarded materials into something beautiful and valuable? That's precisely what Isab, the creative force behind Skinned Potential, is doing with her innovative approach to fashion design.
The world of fashion is often criticized for its environmental impact and wasteful practices. But what if we could transform discarded materials into something beautiful and valuable? That's precisely what Isab, the creative force behind Skinned Potential, is doing with her innovative approach to fashion design.

As a designer, Isab is driven by a passion for both fashion and sustainability. Witnessing the sheer amount of waste produced by the fishing industry, particularly in the smoked salmon process where valuable skins are often discarded, she sparked a desire to transform this overlooked resource into something beautiful and meaningful.

Sourcing the Skins: A Symbiotic Relationship

Unlike traditional leather sourced from cows or other livestock, Isab's materials come from a more unexpected source: the bustling fish markets and local fishmongers of the UK. This unique approach not only reduces waste but also fosters a connection between the fashion industry and the local community.
"I'm particularly concerned about the amount of salmon skin wasted in the smoked salmon industry" - Isab. "It's a high-quality material with so much potential, and it's often discarded or used for low-profitability purposes like fish oil or biofuel."

Isab's journey begins at local fishmongers and seafood markets, where a surprising amount of fish skin ends up discarded. Farmed salmon, the UK's most popular fish, generates a significant amount of this waste. It's estimated that roughly 30-40% of each salmon is unused, including the skin. Instead of seeing this as a refusal, Isab sees the potential.
Salmon skin, for instance, is prized for its vibrant pink hues and supple texture, while catfish skin offers a smoother, more uniform surface. The diversity of fish species allows Isab to experiment with different textures, colors, and patterns, ensuring each garment is truly one-of-a-kind.

Transforming the Raw Material: A Labor of Love

The transformation from raw fish skin to wearable leather is a meticulous and labor-intensive process. It begins with careful cleaning and preparation. Each skin is meticulously washed, descaled, tanned and dyed.
Isab has developed her own unique plant-based tanning method, a testament to her dedication to sustainability and innovation. This process, which can take several days, transforms the skin into durable and supple leather, ready for creative exploration.

From Concept to Creation: The Birth of a Garment

Once the fish leather is prepared, the real creative process begins. Isab draws inspiration from various sources, including nature, art, and her own personal experiences. She carefully considers the unique qualities of each skin, allowing the material to guide her design.
Isab employs a range of techniques, from traditional sewing and pattern cutting to more experimental methods like sculpting and embellishing. She meticulously crafts each garment, paying attention to every detail. The result is a harmonious blend of artistry and sustainability.

The Testament to Transformative Power

The culmination of this journey is a finished garment that embodies both artistry and sustainability. Each piece tells a story – of the fish, of the transformation process, and her creative expression.
It's a story of transforming something often overlooked into something truly extraordinary. By embracing the potential of discarded materials, Isab is not only creating beautiful and unique fashion but also inspiring a more conscious and responsible approach to design.
