Dolce's love for fashion started early—he was already making his own clothes at just six years old! This passion led him to study fashion design at the Marangoni Institute in Milan. However, Dolce, ever the quick learner, left the program after only four months, feeling he'd already grasped all the school had to offer. With his natural talent and drive, he then moved on to work for Giorgio Corregiari, a prominent Italian fashion brand of the era.

Their instant connection led them to collaborate, and by 1982, after Gabbana had finished his military service, the dynamic duo decided to take a leap of faith and start their own design consulting studio. A journey from struggles to the pinnacle of success.

When Dolce & Gabbana first launched, they faced significant financial hurdles. They had to get creative, leaning on friends to help cover costs for hiring models and supplying accessories. In 1985, thanks to their involvement with the Milan Fashion Talent group, they caught the eye of fashion promoter Beppe Modenese, who invited them to their very first runway show. They enlisted trusted friends to model the looks, using their own clothes and accessories to keep costs down. Dolce even brought a bedsheet from home to serve as the stage curtain! This resourceful spirit gave birth to their first collection, aptly named “Real Women,” a tribute to the genuine, everyday women who graced their runway. 

From this point forward, as Dolce & Gabbana's brand identity began to take shape and truly stand out, their success only skyrocketed. Just a year later, in 1986, they launched their second collection and opened their very first store. This collection drew inspiration from the authentic yet captivating women portrayed in the classic works of The Leopard, the stories of Verga, and the paintings of Guttuso, capturing the essence of timeless Italian allure.

During this period, Dolce & Gabbana’s design, "The Sicilian Dress" was considered one of the most influential garments of all time and represented the brand’s distinctiveness at that time. Characterized by its fitted silhouette, luxurious fabrics like lace and satin, and inspiration from traditional Sicilian attire, the dress celebrates femininity and sensuality. It's a timeless piece that reflects Dolce & Gabbana's ability to blend classic Italian aesthetics with modern fashion, honoring their roots while appealing to a global audience.

During this period, Dolce & Gabbana continued to make a mark with standout designs, such as their Spring/Summer 2003 collection, which was praised for its blend of sensuality and the strength of a female warrior.
