- Hand Washing: Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water, add a mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Gently agitate the water to create suds, submerge the raffia item and gently swish it around in the soapy water. Allow the item to soak for a few minutes. Gently scrub any stained or soiled areas with a soft brush or cloth. Rinse the item thoroughly with cool, clean water until all detergent is removed.
- Water Temperature: Use lukewarm or cool water when handwashing raffia fabric. Avoid hot water, as it can cause the fibers to weaken or deform.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Refrain from using harsh chemicals, bleach, or strong detergents, as they can damage the natural raffia fibers. Stick to gentle, mild detergents.
- Drying: After handwashing, gently press the water out of the raffia item by placing it on a clean, dry towel and rolling it up to absorb excess moisture. Reshape the item to its original dimensions and allow it to air dry in a shaded area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Avoid hanging raffia items as they may lose their shape.
- Ironing: Raffia fabric is not suitable for ironing as it can melt or become misshapen under heat. Avoid using an iron on raffia items.
