Sarah Burton’s appointment as Givenchy’s Creative Director not only marks a fresh beginning but also hints at a return to the brand’s classical elegance. With her visionary approach and three-decade expertise, Burton is set to redefine Givenchy’s heritage and bring new inspiration to the fashion world.

Surprising yet thrilling news for Givenchy fans: Sarah Burton has been announced as the new Creative Director. The British designer, who dedicated her entire career to building the legacy of Alexander McQueen, will now take the reins as the eighth creative head of Givenchy—and notably, the second woman ever to hold this prestigious position. This appointment signals a new era for the brand, blending Burton’s distinctive aesthetic with Givenchy’s storied heritage, and promises to introduce a refreshing take on timeless elegance.

Givenchy welcomes a return to classic sophistication as Sarah Burton takes over as Creative Director.

Givenchy’s decision to appoint Sarah Burton as Creative Director marks a turning point for the brand, signaling a shift back to timeless elegance and heritage values. This new chapter comes after Matthew M. Williams’s departure in December 2023, ending his three-year tenure that transformed Givenchy’s DNA with his streetwear-inspired designs. Williams revitalized the brand’s presence by merging urban aesthetics with haute couture, appealing to a younger, more trend-savvy audience. His collections, featuring bold tailoring and accessories like the highly-coveted Shark Lock boots, quickly became a fashion sensation. Now, with Burton at the helm, Givenchy aims to balance its newfound edge with a return to classical sophistication, creating an exciting evolution in its creative journey.
However, many long-time fans of the brand are not entirely on board with this shift in style. They yearn for a return to the classic elegance of the Givenchy founded by Hubert de Givenchy, the dark, gothic allure brought by Riccardo Tisci, or even the minimalist sophistication under Clare Waight Keller. With Sarah Burton’s appointment, there is a sense of hope that she will bridge these eras, merging the refined sophistication of Givenchy’s storied past with a modern perspective that respects its rich heritage.

As Burton steps into this new role, she’s faced with the challenge of balancing expectations from both the old-school devotees and a new generation of fashion enthusiasts. Her ability to weave narratives into fabric is well-known, and many anticipate that she will reintroduce a touch of that long-missed romanticism and artistry. While it remains to be seen exactly how she will shape the future of Givenchy, one thing is certain: her tenure could redefine the brand’s creative path, restoring its legacy of timeless allure while setting a fresh, contemporary tone.
The veteran British designer, joining Givenchy after nearly three decades at rival house Kering, is one of the most respected figures in fashion today. With a solid foundation from both formal training and mentorship under the legendary Lee Alexander McQueen, her exceptional vision led McQueen’s brand through a new era after the founder’s passing. Her creations often draw inspiration from the mystical landscapes of her English homeland, echoing the dark romanticism seen in Givenchy under Riccardo Tisci’s reign.

Having worked closely with McQueen from 1996 until his death in 2010, Sarah Burton’s tenure as his successor has been marked by her ability to blend supernatural themes with modern sophistication, making her a fitting choice for Givenchy’s creative helm.

Sarah Burton possesses the talent to create designs that capture global attention. In 2011, she designed the wedding dress for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, a gown that became iconic and adored by millions of brides worldwide. This masterpiece earned her the Order of the British Empire (OBE), showcasing her extraordinary skill and creativity. With her ability to create such impactful moments, Burton’s designs have not only defined fashion history but also solidified her place as one of the most influential designers of our time.

Sarah Burton at Givenchy will bring forth unparalleled haute couture creations.

Givenchy presents a significant challenge for Sarah Burton as she steps into this role during a transformative period for the French fashion house. With Matthew M. Williams’s departure, the brand is looking for a creative director who can honor its heritage while driving it forward with innovation.
This new opportunity allows Burton’s exceptional craftsmanship and unrivaled haute couture expertise to shine within Givenchy’s high-end Parisian fashion setting. Her feminine designs will carry on the legacy of Hubert de Givenchy.
Burton will begin working at the Avenue George V atelier this week, and her first collection for Givenchy will be unveiled at Paris Fashion Week. The creative direction under Sarah Burton will be revealed during the Fall/Winter 2025 show, scheduled for March 2025.
